No two glamping experiences are created equal. Glamping evokes imagery of ostentatious bathtubs overlooking the Serengeti or giant yurts on the English countryside but the term is subjective. Some have king-size beds, while the inclusion of a cot in a four-man tent could be labelled as a glamping experience on Airbnb. The basic concept is that glamping accommodations have amenities more luxurious than those typically associated with camping. And I’m here for it — there are nice fluffy towels, comfy beds, and more often than not a ridiculously picturesque landscape viewable from the said comfy bed. Just take a look at the Ome glamping accommodations we experienced for our first wedding anniversary. So when it came to choosing Bonavista accommodations, Bonavista Living‘s Eco Glamping Pod was top of the list.

The most unique of Bonavista accommodationsMy best St. John’s restaurants’ list for 2018 contains the restaurants that have been my go-to’s for the year — the ones I crave regularly and go back to over and over again. Some can be found on best lists and some really should be.
Imagine a food festival where you would meander along the coastline sampling dishes from famous chefs and drinking wine. Musicians would play music while you lingered by the ocean with a full belly and happy heart and you finish your afternoon with desserts in a playground. Well, dreams really do come true.
Hop Hop Hurray! The craft beer scene here in Newfoundland is bubbling over. There are literally dozens of breweries set to open the next year and I’m slowly working my way down the list (hard job, but someone’s gotta do it! Labour Day weekend Adam and I drove out to spend the weekend in Dildo to try the Dildo Brewing Co. and Museum which opened just a few months ago. What a difference a year makes! We spent the weekend in Dildo last year while I was covering a story for North American Traveller and while the town was had lots to offer, it’s now bustling with the new brewery, newly-opened Dildo Cove Outdoor Adventures, and a re-branded Dildo Dory Grill. Dining at the Fogo Island Inn feels like being at nan’s — an onslaught of pastries the moment you walk in the door until you walk out with a bagged lunch for the trip home. Here’s what’s new on the menu.
When new restaurants open in St. John’s, I get excited. When said restaurant opens a ten-minute walk from my house I get fired up — I couldn’t wait to blog about Noodle Nami.
I once heard a friend say “Newfoundland has a lot of brown food,” and it’s kind of true — fish and chips, fish and brewis and chips with dressing and gravy show up to the table in hues of beige and brown. Green Kitchen is the exact opposite of brown food, flashing a rainbow of flavours and textures without meat or dairy. This new plant-based restaurant opened in St. John’s about a month ago and I was pretty excited! We all know about my love of meat, but this girl loves a good power bowl as much as the next one. When Jumping Bean closed their Harvey Road location earlier this year I was pretty crushed, it was one of the only places I could get a decent coffee in my neighbourhood, but a new restaurant got me over it pretty quickly.
Screw stopping to smell the roses, I’m all about them ocean views. Witless Bay is only about half an hour’s drive from St. John’s, so it’s easy to get there on a Friday evening, but it feels like it’s a million miles away.
While perusing ‘historic saltbox homes near the ocean’ on AirBnb I stumbled upon a series of small cabins cloaked in canvas. “There’s Glamping in Newfoundland?”
When I first walked by Kimchi & Sushi the first thing I asked myself was “Is there such thing as Korean sushi?” After a quick Google search I fell down a rabbit hole of frenzied (but fierce) debates over whether Korean sushi is better than Japanese… I haven’t come to a decision, but repeated trips to this downtown St. John’s restaurant will probably help me decide! Last month, the new app HelpMeOrder asked me to collaborate with them on some videos featuring the best dishes at restaurants featured on their app and I was more than delighted to oblige. The app helps indecisive foodies determine the best dishes at restaurants all over the city, and for my Anthony Bourdain moment I ate the best of Kimchi & Sushi’s dishes and talk about it!
